Mulch Bags Calculator

Enter your bed size and depth to get the exact number of bags you need — for both 2 cu ft and 3 cu ft bags.

Your Price (optional)

Enter your supplier's prices to compare bulk vs. bags.

How to Use This Calculator

Enter your bed length and width in feet, then set the desired depth in inches. The calculator shows the bag count for 2 cu ft bags (the most common size at home improvement stores) and also displays the equivalent cubic yards if you want to compare bulk pricing. A 10% waste factor is built in so you don't run short mid-bed. If your bed has multiple sections, run each section separately and add the bag totals. Use the preset buttons to instantly fill common bed sizes, or type your own dimensions for any custom shape.

How to Calculate Mulch Bag Count

Bag count formula: bags = ⌈(length × width × depth ÷ 12 × 1.1) ÷ bag size⌉. Break it into steps: (1) convert depth from inches to feet by dividing by 12, (2) multiply length × width × depth to get cubic feet, (3) multiply by 1.1 for 10% waste, (4) divide by the bag size in cubic feet, (5) round up with Math.ceil — never round down on bags.

Bag count quick reference table at 3 inches deep:

Area 2 cu ft bags 3 cu ft bags Cubic yards
50 sq ft750.5
100 sq ft14101.0
200 sq ft28192.0
400 sq ft55374.1

All values include the 10% waste factor and use Math.ceil rounding. The cubic yard column shows what you would order from a bulk supplier for the same area.

Buying Mulch by the Bag

Buy all bags from the same production batch. Mulch color and texture varies slightly between batches and delivery dates. If you buy 10 bags in April and return for 5 more in May, the new bags may not match. When in doubt, buy one or two extra bags on the first trip — most stores accept returns on unopened bags.

Check spring sale timing before buying. Home improvement stores run deep mulch sales starting in early spring (late March through May in most regions). Prices per 2 cu ft bag can drop from $5 to $2 during these sales. If your project is not urgent, waiting two weeks can cut your mulch cost in half.

Stack bags on a tarp at the edge of the bed, not in the middle. Opening and spreading bags one at a time from the bed edge is much easier than lifting heavy bags over planted areas. If you have multiple beds, unload all bags near each area first, then spread — this prevents multiple trips back to your vehicle or wheelbarrow.

What to Buy

Scotts Premium Mulch and Vigoro Brown Mulch (2 cu ft bags) are the most widely available options at Home Depot and Lowe's. Both are double-shredded hardwood that holds color for one season and breaks down gradually into soil-improving organic matter.

For decorative beds visible from the street, Scotts Nature Scapes Color Enhanced Mulch stays darker longer than uncolored hardwood mulch. For vegetable gardens, choose undyed natural mulch — cedar or uncolored hardwood — since dyed mulch can introduce colorants into edible soil. Straw mulch is also excellent for vegetable beds at a lower cost per bag.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many 2 cu ft bags of mulch do I need for a 10×10 bed at 3 inches? +
A 10 × 10 bed at 3 inches deep needs 25 cubic feet of mulch, which is 12.5 bags of 2 cu ft. With a 10% waste factor, that rounds up to 14 bags. Always buy whole bags and round up — running short mid-project means a second trip to the store and risks color or texture variation between purchase batches.
How many bags of mulch are in one cubic yard? +
One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. A 2 cu ft bag covers 13.5 bags per cubic yard. A 3 cu ft bag covers 9 bags per cubic yard. Since partial bags don't exist, you will need 14 bags (2 cu ft) or 9 bags (3 cu ft) per cubic yard when purchasing. Bulk mulch by the yard is cheaper for orders over 2 cubic yards.
How many bags of mulch do I need for 100 square feet? +
At 3 inches deep, 100 square feet needs 25 cubic feet — about 13 bags of 2 cu ft, rounded up to 14 with waste. At 2 inches deep, the same area needs about 17 cubic feet — 9 bags of 2 cu ft, rounded up to 10. At 4 inches deep, you need 33 cubic feet — 17 bags of 2 cu ft, rounded up to 19.
Is it cheaper to buy bags or bulk mulch? +
Bulk mulch is cheaper for any order over 2 cubic yards. At average prices, 2 cu ft bags cost $4 to $7 each, which works out to $54 to $95 per cubic yard. Bulk mulch costs $25 to $45 per cubic yard plus delivery (usually $50 to $150). For projects under 2 cubic yards, bags are more convenient and often competitive in price, especially during spring sales at home improvement stores.
How many bags of mulch fit in a pickup truck? +
A standard short-bed pickup truck holds roughly 2 cubic yards of loose mulch or about 24 to 30 bags of 2 cu ft bagged mulch before the bed is dangerously full. A long-bed holds about 3 cubic yards loose. Bags are denser and heavier than loose bulk mulch — 25 bags weigh approximately 500 to 750 pounds depending on moisture content. Check your truck's payload rating before loading.
What is the difference between 2 cu ft and 3 cu ft bags of mulch? +
A 2 cu ft bag covers about 8 square feet at 3 inches deep and weighs 20 to 40 pounds. A 3 cu ft bag covers about 12 square feet at 3 inches and weighs 30 to 60 pounds. The 3 cu ft bags are heavier and harder to handle but require fewer trips from the car to the bed. For large beds, 3 cu ft bags reduce total bag count by about one-third.
How many bags of mulch do I need for a 200 square foot bed? +
200 square feet at 3 inches deep needs 50 cubic feet, or 25 bags of 2 cu ft — round up to 28 bags with the 10% waste factor. At 2 inches deep you need 33 cubic feet — 17 bags, round up to 19. For a project this size, compare the bag total cost against a bulk cubic yard order plus delivery fee to see which is cheaper.
Can I stack mulch bags to cover an irregular shaped bed? +
Yes. Calculate the total square footage of the irregular bed first. Break the shape into rectangles, calculate each section, and add the square footage totals. Then enter the combined area into the calculator to get your bag count. Irregular shapes with curved edges typically need an extra 5 to 10% beyond the calculator estimate — the 10% waste factor already built into results usually covers this.
