Why Use a Construction Calculator?

Buy the right amount

Over-ordering means waste. Under-ordering means a second trip. Our calculators include a 10% waste factor so you land right the first time.

Save time and money

Knowing your quantities before you shop means faster checkouts, fewer returns, and no surprises mid-project.

Works for any project size

Small patio or large driveway, our tools scale to any project. Enter your dimensions and get a result in seconds.

How to Estimate Construction Materials

Every construction material estimate starts with three measurements: length, width, and depth. Length and width give you area in square feet. Multiply by depth (converted to feet) and divide by 27 to get cubic yards, the standard unit for bulk materials like concrete, gravel, and sand. Most suppliers quote and deliver by the cubic yard, so that is the number to have ready when you call.

Always add 10% for waste. On a concrete pour, waste comes from spillage, uneven subgrade, and overfill in low spots. On gravel, it accounts for settling over the first few months. On lumber and drywall, it covers cut loss. Our calculators apply this 10% automatically. The result shown is what you order, not the theoretical minimum.

For L-shaped or irregular areas, break the space into rectangles. Calculate each section separately and add the cubic yard totals. For circular areas like round footings or round patios, use the circle mode in the appropriate calculator.

Common Construction Projects

Concrete Slabs and Driveways

A standard concrete patio is 4 inches thick. Driveways for passenger vehicles: 4 inches minimum; for trucks, 6 inches. Use the concrete calculator to get bag count or cubic yards for ready-mix. Include footing depth for posts and piers. One 80-lb bag covers 0.60 cubic feet.

Gravel Driveways and Base Layers

A residential gravel driveway needs 4 inches of compacted crushed stone minimum; use 6 inches for truck traffic or clay-heavy soil. Use the gravel calculator to get cubic yards and tons. Suppliers price gravel by the ton at the quarry and by the yard for delivered loads.

Drywall and Interior Framing

Calculate drywall by total wall and ceiling area minus door and window openings, then add 10% for cut waste. Use 1/2-inch standard for walls and ceilings, 5/8-inch Type X for garages and fire-rated assemblies. The drywall calculator also estimates joint compound and screw quantities.

Wood Fences and Post Work

Fence posts go 1/3 of total post length into the ground, plus below the frost line. A 6-foot fence uses 9-foot posts with 3 feet underground. Two 60-lb bags of fast-setting concrete per post is standard. The fence calculator handles posts, pickets, rails, and concrete in one calculation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many cubic yards are in a ton of gravel?

Crushed gravel weighs about 1.40 tons per cubic yard. Pea gravel is 1.35 tons per yard. Limestone and granite run 1.50 tons per yard. Divide cubic yards by the density factor to get tons, or multiply tons by the density factor to get cubic yards. Quarries typically sell by the ton; landscape suppliers often sell by the yard for delivered loads.

What is the 10% waste factor and do I always need it?

The 10% waste factor accounts for material lost during installation: spillage, cut scraps, uneven surfaces, and settling. For most DIY projects it is the right allowance. Professional contractors sometimes use 15% on complex jobs with lots of cuts. Our calculators apply 10% by default, which is correct for the majority of projects. Never order without the waste factor; running short of concrete mid-pour is a serious problem.

Should I order concrete in bags or ready-mix?

Under 1 cubic yard: bags are practical. Between 1 and 3 cubic yards: call a ready-mix plant for a short-load price; it often beats the cost and labor of mixing 50-plus bags. Over 3 cubic yards: ready-mix is the only sensible choice. Mixing bags for a large pour takes too long; concrete must be placed within 90 minutes of mixing and a cold joint (visible seam between pours) is a structural weak point.
