Enter your room length and width in feet, then the wall height. Standard residential walls are 8 feet; newer construction is often 9 feet. The Drywall Calculation Formula

Step 1: Wall area. Perimeter = 2 × (L + W). Wall area = perimeter × height. Subtract 20 sq ft per door and 15 sq ft per window.

Step 2: Add ceiling. If drywalling the ceiling, add L × W to wall area.

Step 3: Apply waste. Multiply total area by 1.10. This 10% covers cuts at corners, openings, and any damaged sheets.

Step 4: Sheet count. Divide area-with-waste by sheet size (32 for 4×8, 40 for 4×10, 48 for 4×12). Round up, never round down.

Step 5: Consumables. Joint compound: ceil(area ÷ 200) buckets. Tape: ceil(sheets × 40 ÷ 500) rolls. Screws: ceil(area ÷ 300) boxes.

Calculation Tips That Save Material

Calculate each room separately and order all sheets at once. Buying in one order from a supplier gets you better pricing and ensures all sheets come from the same production batch, important for consistent thickness and finish behavior.

Measure door and window rough openings, not the frame or trim. Rough openings are larger than the finished opening and represent the actual area where drywall is not installed. A standard 32-inch interior door has a rough opening of about 34 × 82 inches, or roughly 19 square feet, close to the 20 sq ft the calculator uses.

Do not reduce the waste factor below 10% even on simple rectangular rooms. Cuts at corners, electrical boxes, and light fixtures add up quickly. On rooms with many inside corners, vaulted ceilings, or complex soffits, bump the waste factor to 15% before dividing by sheet area.

What to Buy

Use 1/2-inch standard drywall for walls and ceilings in living spaces. Use 5/8-inch Type X for fire-rated assemblies (garage-to-house wall, between floors in multi-family). Use moisture-resistant 1/2-inch in bathrooms. Use cement board in wet areas; standard drywall behind tile will eventually fail in showers and tub surrounds.

For joint compound, buy all-purpose premixed in 5-gallon buckets. It is the most forgiving for beginners, being workable, sandable, and compatible with most primers. For a faster-setting first coat on tape, use a powder-type setting compound such as 45 or 90 (the number indicates set time in minutes). Setting compound shrinks less, which reduces cracking over taped joints.

How do you calculate drywall tape needed? +
Estimate 40 linear feet of joint tape per sheet of drywall. A 500-foot roll of paper tape is standard. Divide (sheets × 40) by 500 and round up. For 19 sheets: 19 × 40 = 760 ft ÷ 500 = 2 rolls.
