How to Estimate Home and Construction Materials

For most projects the formula is the same: length × width × depth gives cubic feet, divide by 27 for cubic yards. Add 10% waste. Below are the quick-reference numbers for the most common materials.

Whether you're estimating concrete, gravel, flooring, insulation, or using our Drywall Calculator, HomeCalcTool provides fast and accurate material estimates with waste included. Our free home construction calculators help homeowners, contractors, and DIY users complete projects with confidence.

Concrete & Masonry

  • 1 cubic yard needs 45 bags of 80-lb concrete (60 bags of 60-lb).
  • Patio slab: pour 4 inches thick. Driveway for passenger cars: 4 in. For trucks: 6 in.
  • Post holes: two 80-lb bags of fast-setting concrete per hole up to 10-inch diameter.
  • Formula: (L × W × depth in) ÷ 12 ÷ 27 = cubic yards.

Gravel, Mulch & Topsoil

  • 1 cubic yard of mulch covers 108 sq ft at 3 in deep, 162 sq ft at 2 in, or 81 sq ft at 4 in.
  • Gravel driveway: minimum 4 inches of compacted crushed stone. Crushed stone weighs 1.4 tons/yard.
  • Topsoil: 1 yard fills a 4×8 raised bed to 8-inch depth. Screened topsoil with compost for garden beds.
  • Mulch depth: 3 in for new beds, 2 in to refresh. Never over 4 in around plant stems.

Flooring & Interior

  • Waste factor: 10% for straight-lay flooring, 15% for diagonal or herringbone pattern.
  • Drywall: one 4×8 sheet covers 32 sq ft. Use 1/2-in for standard walls, 5/8-in Type X for garages.
  • Tile: measure sq ft, add waste, divide by sq ft per box listed on packaging.
  • Paint: one gallon covers 350-400 sq ft with one coat. Two coats on new drywall is standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate cubic yards of concrete?

Multiply length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (in) ÷ 12, then divide by 27. For a 10×10 patio at 4 inches: 10 × 10 × 0.333 ÷ 27 = 1.23 cubic yards. Add 10% waste and you need 1.36 yards, which is about 62 bags of 80-lb concrete. Use the concrete calculator to get bag count and ready-mix comparison instantly.

How much gravel do I need for a driveway?

A standard residential gravel driveway needs 4 inches of compacted crushed stone. Multiply length × width × 0.333 (depth in feet) ÷ 27 for cubic yards. A 50×12 driveway at 4 inches = 7.4 cubic yards or about 10.4 tons of crushed stone. Order 10% extra for settling. The gravel calculator converts to tons by material type automatically.

How do I calculate square footage?

For a rectangular room or area: length × width in feet. For an L-shaped space: divide it into two rectangles, calculate each, and add the totals. For a circle: 3.14159 × radius². A 12×15 room = 180 sq ft. A 14-foot diameter circular patio = 153.9 sq ft. The square footage calculator handles rectangles, circles, and multiple rooms.

What is a waste factor and how much should I add?

A waste factor accounts for material lost during installation: concrete spilled, gravel that settles, tiles cut to fit corners, drywall scraps from openings. The standard is 10% for most projects. Add 15% for complex tile patterns with diagonal cuts or for rooms with many corners. All calculators on this site apply 10% automatically. The number shown is what you order, not the theoretical minimum.

How much mulch do I need for my garden beds?

Measure the bed area in square feet. One cubic yard of mulch covers 108 sq ft at 3 inches deep, 162 sq ft at 2 inches, or 81 sq ft at 4 inches. For a 200 sq ft garden bed at 3 inches: 200 ÷ 108 = 1.85 cubic yards. Add 10% = 2.04, so order 2.5 cubic yards. Apply 3 inches for new beds, 2 inches to refresh existing mulch. The mulch calculator also gives 2-cubic-foot bag count.

How many bags of concrete do I need per fence post?

Two 80-lb bags of fast-setting concrete fill a standard 10-inch diameter hole to 30-inch depth, the typical requirement for a 6-foot fence post in moderate soil. For clay soil or areas with frost heave, go 36-42 inches deep and use three bags. Pour the dry mix directly into the hole, add water, and let it set 4 hours before applying load. The fence post concrete calculator handles any post size and spacing.
