How to Calculate Asphalt Tonnage
Formula: Tons = (Length × Width × Depth in inches ÷ 12) × Density ÷ 2,000.
Hot mix asphalt density: 145 lbs per compacted cubic foot. Asphalt millings: 110 lbs per cubic foot.
Example: a 40-foot by 20-foot two-car driveway at 3 inches of hot mix asphalt. Step 1: cubic feet = 40 × 20 × (3 ÷ 12) = 200 ft³. Step 2: raw weight = 200 × 145 = 29,000 lbs. Step 3: raw tons = 29,000 ÷ 2,000 = 14.5 tons. Step 4: add 10% waste = 15.95 tons. Order 16 tons.

Ordering Asphalt Tips
Match depth to the expected traffic. Passenger cars only: 2 to 3 inches of HMA over a 4-inch compacted aggregate base. Regular pickup trucks and SUVs: 3 to 4 inches. Commercial deliveries and garbage trucks: 4 to 6 inches. Under-built asphalt ruts and cracks quickly under loads it was not designed for.
Call the batch plant, not just the contractor. Asphalt is time-sensitive: it must be placed within 30 to 45 minutes of leaving the plant. Batch plants have scheduling windows, and a large project may need multiple loads coordinated. If you are managing your own project, confirm the plant's operating hours and delivery radius before scheduling.
Price lock in summer. Asphalt prices track crude oil prices and peak in fall when paving season winds down. Getting a quote in May or June for work done in July often produces the best price and contractor availability. Waiting until September typically means higher prices and a tighter contractor schedule.
What to Buy
For new driveways and parking lots: contact local paving contractors for hot mix asphalt delivered and installed. Hot mix cannot be purchased as a DIY material at hardware stores. Most contractors quote per square foot installed, including base prep and compaction. Get two to three quotes — asphalt pricing varies more than most other construction materials.
For repairs under 20 square feet: cold patch asphalt in 50-pound bags. Available at hardware stores under brands like Quikrete, Sakrete, and QPR. Cold patch is workable without heating and cures under traffic. One ton of hot mix asphalt covers approximately 80 square feet at 2 inches, 55 square feet at 3 inches, or 40 square feet at 4 inches. These figures use a compacted density of 145 lbs per cubic foot. How many tons of asphalt do I need for a standard driveway? +
A standard single-car driveway (10×40 ft, 400 sq ft) at 3 inches needs about 8.7 tons with waste. A 2-car driveway (20×40 ft, 800 sq ft) at 3 inches needs about 17 tons. At 4 inches for heavier vehicles: the same 2-car drive needs about 23 tons. Always get a quote from your paving contractor who will give you tonnage based on their specific mix density.
What is the minimum tonnage most asphalt suppliers will deliver? +
Most batch plants and asphalt suppliers have a minimum delivery of 5 to 10 tons. Small loads under the minimum are sometimes possible but may carry a small-load surcharge of $50 to $150. For repairs and patches under 5 tons, consider renting a pickup and hauling from the plant (most plants sell walk-up loads), or use cold patch asphalt from a hardware store for areas under 10 square feet.
What is the difference between tons and cubic yards for asphalt? +
Asphalt is sold and ordered by the ton, not by the cubic yard. A cubic yard of compacted hot mix asphalt weighs about 1.96 tons (145 lbs/ft³ × 27 ft³/yd³ ÷ 2,000 = 1.96 tons). Most suppliers quote by the ton. Batch plants and contractors always use tons. If a supplier quotes you in cubic yards, multiply by 1.96 to convert to tons for ordering.
Should I order extra asphalt for waste? +
Yes. Always add 10% to your calculated tonnage before ordering. Asphalt loss comes from: material left in the truck (never fully empties), uneven subgrade that uses more material than calculated, edges and feathering at driveways, and unexpected low spots. If your calculation shows 8.7 tons, order 10 tons. The overage is usually worth the extra cost vs. running short mid-pour.
